During the European Week of Regions and Cities, the first three Smart Cities and Communities projects GrowSmarter, Remourban and Triangulum, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme, hosted the session "From dream to reality: sharing experiences from leading European Smart Cities" in which more than 150 participants took part. The aim is to validate the technical and economic feasibility of executing an energy refurbishment of a tertiary building. The cities of Stockholm, Barcelona and Cologne have compiled a set of recommendations from the five-year EU GrowSmarter project. It is the first smart city project to be completed with funding from the European Commission’s Smart Cities and Communities Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The measure comes as part of the European project GrowSmarter, one of the ‘lighthouse’ projects for Smart Cities, funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 innovation programme. GrowSmarter’s mantra is to: stimulate city uptake of ‘smart solutions’ by using the three Lighthouse cities (Stockholm, Cologne and Barcelona) as a way to showcase smart city solutions: from advanced information and communication technology and better connected urban mobility, to incorporating renewable energy sources directly into the GrowSmarter aims to: • Improve the quality of life for European citizens by better mobility, housing and the quality of urban infrastructure while improving the citizens economy by lower energy costs and creating as much as 1500 new jobs (on the demonstration level). GrowSmarter shows the importance of cities as drivers of innovation and leaders of partnerships that drives societal change.
